Caillouxes Generous to Community

The Daily Times Editorial Board

Kerrville sadly has lost the matriarch of a notably generous family with the passing of Kathleen C. Cailloux.

Buildings dotting the area bear the Cailloux name —  works of concrete, brick and mortar that serve as reminders of the family’s benevolence. However, the finished products have served as so much more than just facilities, but have opened the doors to opportunities and dreams.

The Kathleen C. Cailloux Humane Society of Kerrville, which opened its doors nearly five years ago, brought a larger and more accommodating facility to give unwanted pets a second chance.

Another Hill Country gem came with the Kathleen C. Cailloux Center for the Performing Arts. The Caillouxes helped convert an ailing municipal auditorium into a gorgeous theater that has found many uses since its opening.

Similar pride can be taken in the two buildings at Schreiner University and the Cailloux Charter School at the Hill Country Youth Ranch, which have opened up educational opportunities for youth.

Those are just a few of the physical reminders of all that the Caillouxes and the Cailloux Foundation have done for our community — all unassuming and with great generosity.

Many other deeds, from scholarships to grants, may not have a nameplate bearing the contributors’ name but have made a difference just the same.

Our community has been fortunate to have received such gracious support from the Cailloux family. Kathleen Cailloux, like her husband Floyd, will be missed as a beacon of kindness in Kerr County.n
