KERRVILLE—Eighteen high school graduates from the Hill Country have been chosen to receive scholarships from the Floyd A. and Kathleen C. Cailloux Foundation (the Foundation) of Kerrville, Texas. The Foundation established The Cailloux Foundation Scholarship Program in 2000 to benefit graduating seniors from selected Texas Hill Country high schools. Last year the Foundation awarded 16 scholarships.  

The 2008 recipients have been chosen from high schools in Bandera, Comfort, Harper, Junction, Kerrville, Medina, and Leakey. Awards are up to $12,000 per recipient annually and are for undergraduate study only. The scholarships are renewable for up to four years for a maximum multi-year award of $48,000 per student. Scholarship recipients attend four-year public or private colleges or universities in Texas. The program will now have 61 freshmen through senior level students participating as scholarship recipients.  

 The applicants met a minimum Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score requirement of 1022, or a minimum American College Test (ACT) score of 22. They have a minimum grade average of 85 and are in the top one-third of their class. Scholarship applications were made available to any interested senior graduating from an eligible high school and meeting the academic and financial eligibility requirements. Eligible high schools include Bandera High School, Ed Brune High School at Big Spring Ranch near Leakey, Center Point High School, Comfort High School, Fredericksburg High School, Harper High School, Ingram’s Tom Moore High School, Junction High School, Leakey High School, Mason High School, Medina High School, Nueces Canyon High School near Barksdale, Our Lady of the Hills Catholic High School in Kerrville, Rocksprings High School, Tivy High School in Kerrville, and Utopia High School in Utopia. The scholarship application was available on the Internet for any eligible student from November 1, 2007 though February 1, 2008.

The 2008 scholarship recipients include Samantha  J. Johnson and Phillip A. (Drew) Whitehead from Bandera High School; Waylon J. Hastings and Kari Beth Langbein from Comfort High School; Chantelle M. Boatright from Ed Brune High School; Cutter B. Bernhard and Ruthann M. Mounce from Harper High School; Kristin L. Kothmann from Junction High School; Michelle A. Bingham from Leakey High School; Heath C. Harris from Medina High School; as well as Kayla A. Gerstenberg, Lynda M. Gonzalez, Shannon L. Holt, Alyshia K. Lord, Jeremy R. Lara, Bullitt C. Osborne, Amy C. Perry, and Lizzeth B. Rodriguez all from Kerrville’s Tivy High School.  

Cutter Bernard of Harper will major in Kinesiology at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.

Michelle Bingham of Leakey will major in Kinesiology at the University of Texas San Antonio.

Chantelle Boatright of Leakey will attend Sul Ross University in Alpine and major in Psychology.

Kayla Gerstenberg of Kerrville will major in Business Management at Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

Lynda Gonzalez of Kerrville will major in Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin.

Heath Harris of Medina will major in Aerospace Engineering at Texas A&M College Station.

Waylon Hastings of Comfort will major in Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M College Station.

Shannon Holt of Kerrville will major in Fashion Merchandising at Texas State University in San Marcos.

Samantha Johnson of Bandera will major in Physiology at Baylor in Waco.

Kristin Kothmann of Junction will major in Education at Baylor in Waco.

Kari Beth Langbein of Comfort will major in Agri-business at Texas A&M College Station.

Jeremy Lara of Kerrville will major in Biology at Texas A&M College Station.

Alyshia Lord of Kerrville will attend Texas State University in San Marcos and major in Communications.

Ruthann Mounce of Harper will attend Texas A&M College Station and major in Environmental Design and Architechture.

Bullitt Osborne of Kerrville will major in Business at the University of Texas Austin.

Amy Perry of Kerrville will major in Psychology at the University of Texas Austin.

Lizzeth Rodriguez of Kerrville will attend Baylor in Waco and major in Biology.

Drew Whitehead of Bandera will major in Psychology at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

 Final selection of recipients for the scholarship awards were overseen by Scholarship Program Administrators (SPA) of  Nashville, TN. SPA utilized standard comprehensive recipient selection procedures in making the final selections including the consideration of past academic performance, financial need, statement of career goals, educational aspirations, work experience, unusual personal or family circumstances, leadership skills, participation in school and community activities, recommendation letters, and an essay.  

 “Our new scholarship recipients want to become journalists, doctors, psychologists, archeologists, engineers, teachers, or to work in business management or the fashion industry,” said Sandy Cailloux Executive Director for the Foundation, “The scholarship program is one of the Foundation’s most important ongoing programs and we want to help these young people realize their goals,” she added.
