KERRVILLE—Sixteen high school graduates from the Hill Country have been chosen to receive scholarships from the Floyd A. and Kathleen C. Cailloux Foundation (the Foundation) of Kerrville, Texas. The Foundation established The Cailloux Foundation Scholarship Program in 2000 to benefit graduating seniors from selected Texas Hill Country high schools.

 The 2007 recipients have been chosen from high schools in Bandera, Center Point, Comfort, Harper, Ingram, Junction, and Kerrville. Awards are up to $12,000 per recipient annually and are for undergraduate study only. The scholarships are renewable for up to four years for a maximum multi-year award of $48,000 per student. Scholarship recipients attend four-year public or private colleges or universities in Texas. The program currently has 61 freshmen through senior level students participating as scholarship recipients.

 The 2007 scholarship recipients include Ashley Jennings and Jessica J. Thompson from Bandera High School; Taylor R. Stone from Center Point High School; Dane J. Hall from Comfort High School; Chelsea J. Glocar and Alexandria R. Sharp from Harper High School; Mary E. (Beth) Smith from Ingram Tom Moore High School; Anthony J. Ratkus from Junction High School; as well as Rachel E. Andrews, Amanda M. Conner, Tara Mapes, Ryan L. Medley, Peter A. Navarra II, Abraham E. Rodriguez, E. Mitchell Schumann, and Jonathan Shim all from Kerrville’s Tivy High School.

Rachel Andrews from Tivy High School will major in Spanish at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

Amanda Conner from Tivy High School will major in nursing at UT San Antonio.

Chelsea Glocar from Harper High School will major in nursing at Texas A&M at Corpus Christi.

Dane Hall from Confort High School will major in communications at Texas State University in San Marcos.

Ashley Jennings from Bandera High School will major in journalism at UT Austin.

Tara Mapes from Tivy High School will major in nutrition and food science at Texas State University in San Marcos.

Ryan Medley from Tivy High School will major in psychology at Abilene Christian University in Abilene.

Peter Navarra from Tivy High School will major in astrophysics at Rice University in Houston.

Anthony Ratkus from Junction High School will major in meteorology at Texas A&M at College Station.

Abraham Rodriguez from Tivy High School will major in biology at Baylor University in Waco.

Mitchell Schumann from Tivy High School will major in political science at Texas A&M in College Station.

Alexandria Sharp from Harper High School will major in biology at Angelo State University in San Angelo.

Jonathan Shim from Tivy High School will major in biology at UT Austin.

Beth Smith from Ingram High School will major in biology at Schreiner University in Kerrville.

Taylor Stone from Center Point will major in psychology at Texas A&M in College Station.

Jessica Thompson from Bandera High School will major in accounting at Baylor University in Waco.

 The applicants met or exceeded a minimum Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score requirement of 1022, or a minimum American College Test (ACT) score of 22. They also have a minimum grade average of 85 and are in the top one-third of their class. Scholarship applications were made available to any interested senior graduating from an eligible high school and meeting the academic and financial eligibility requirements. Eligible high schools include Bandera High School, Big Spring Charter School near Leakey, Center Point High School, Comfort High School, Fredericksburg High School, Harper High School, Ingram’s Tom Moore High School, Junction High School, Leakey High School, Mason High School, Medina High School, Nueces Canyon High School near Barksdale, Our Lady of the Hills Catholic High School in Kerrville, Rocksprings High School, Tivy High School in Kerrville, and Utopia High School in Utopia. The scholarship application was available on the Internet for any eligible student from November 1, 2006 though February 1, 2007.

 Final selection of recipients for the scholarship awards were overseen by Scholarship Program Administrators (SPA) of  Nashville, TN. SPA utilized standard comprehensive recipient selection procedures in making the final selections including the consideration of past academic performance, financial need, statement of career goals, educational aspirations, work experience, unusual personal or family circumstances, leadership skills, participation in school and community activities, recommendation letters, and an essay.

 “We hope that providing these awards helps motivate not just the actual scholarship recipients but all of the students in the eligible high schools to improve their grades and test scores as well as consider helping others in  their communities,” said  Sandy Cailloux Executive Director for the Foundation.
