KERRVILLE— The Cailloux Foundation announced that $974,000 in grants have been awarded during the third quarter of 2001. The awards range in size from $5,000 to a multi-year grant totaling $500,000.

The Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston was awarded a $500,000 grant for capital support to help expand and modernize the pediatric hospital. The grant will be paid over three years. The Hospital, founded in 1954, provides family-centered inpatient and outpatient care, and healthcare education to families regardless of ability to pay. The Hospital also provides pediatric medical research and physician training.

An award was made to the Hill Country Youth Ranch in the amount of $350,000 for the purchase and remodeling of a building to house their thrift shop in Ingram, Texas. The thrift shop is operated by volunteers and raises funds for the organization. The Ranch has provided long-term residential care for more than 750 abused, abandoned, and troubled children since 1977.

KIPP Academy, a college preparatory charter school in Houston, was awarded $30,000 to provide financial assistance to families of students continuing their education at high quality high schools across the country. More than 150 KIPP Academy alumni attend 48 different high schools in 18 states. The success of the six-year-old program has brought national attention with a segment on CBS’s 60 Minutes and articles in The New York Times.

The Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to the American Red Cross to aid victims of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York. This grant will be made through the local chapter of the American Red Cross.

The Ronald McDonald House in Houston will receive $24,000 to purchase a large quantity of fire-retardant commercial quality bedspreads. The House opened in 1981, and will provide a home-like setting for more than 700 families of children being treated for serious illnesses in the Texas Medical Center this year.

Center Point Little League received $20,000 to help install lights at one of two baseball fields in Center Point, TX. The all-volunteer organization was formed in the 1970’s and constructed their current fields in 1996.

A grant of $10,000 was awarded to the Christian Women’s Job Corp to support their job-training program to help disadvantaged women move toward independence. The local branch of the Corp, now with more than 50 volunteers, was established in Kerrville in 1998.

The Hill Country Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Foundation to help match a challenge grant for operating funds from the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse. They offer programs to combat alcohol and drug abuse in Kerr and surrounding counties.

A $5,000 award will provide transportation for students and teachers to attend the Texas Heritage Music Foundation’s Living History Day. It will also help provide educational support packages and artists performances in the classroom. The one-day history event, now in it’s sixth year, is scheduled for September 28, 2001 at Louise Hays Park in Kerrville.

Floyd A. and Kathleen C. Cailloux created The Cailloux Foundation in 1994. The Foundation’s mission is to perpetuate their vision through the betterment of individual lives, with emphasis on the needs of disadvantaged children. Mr. Cailloux was co-founder of Keystone International and was instrumental in the company becoming a leader in the manufacturing and marketing of industrial valves for general industry. In 1981, Mr. and Mrs. Cailloux moved from Houston to Kerrville, Texas where they became very involved in charitable endeavors in the Texas Hill Country and around the state. The Foundation continues these endeavors by quietly awarding grants to eligible nonprofit organizations mainly in the Hill Country.

The application process for the Foundation consists of an initial letter of inquiry from a nonprofit organization to help Foundation staff determine if a project fits within its guidelines. If a project does fit the guidelines, a full grant application is provided for the agency to complete.
